Museo Italiano

Museo Italiano

Museo Italiano, situated in the heart of Carlton, is a permanent exhibition which draws on and displays the records, images and objects of the Italian Historical Society.

The permanent exhibition focuses on an exploration of the history of Italian migration and illustrates the broader experience and influence of Italian migration to Australia.

The exhibition utilises objects, multimedia and interactive displays to showcase the history of Italian migration, and the continuing change of identity and culture.
While the individual objects exhibited tell the stories of their own lives, they also represent the collective story of the community.

Located in Faraday Street, the Museo Italiano is an attractive and contemporary space and compliments Co.As.It.'s central focus for the provision of resources, history and information about the Italian culture and languages in Australia for the purpose of study, education and enjoyment.

The identification of the Lygon Street Precinct by the Victorian Government as the centre of the Italian community has provided Co.As.It. with the opportunity to establish a Heritage Centre (Museo Italiano) with funding received from Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC), as part of the Precincts Enhancement Fund within the City of Melbourne. The Museo Italiano was officially opened on the 3rd of October 2010.

The layout of the exhibition is broadly chronological and, through its themes, represents the journey of Italian migrant families to Australia, from the early days of European settlement.  The exhibition also has as its backbone an illuminated Timeline, highlighting significant and parallel events in the history of Italy, Australia and the Italian migration story.  The themes represented within the Museo include:
